Pioneer Summer School

The Fenelon Museum, in partnership with the Retired Teachers of Ontario, operates a one room school at Maryboro Lodge. The school recreates the experience of a turn-of-the-century classroom, giving its scholars a taste of the day-to-day experiences, culture, classroom etiquette, challenges, and simple pleasures of local schools in days gone by.
The school is open during regular museum operating hours. A teacher will frequently be working in the classroom, and may even conduct an impromptu lesson! Groups may register for special school programs with the Teacher-on-Site. Children are encouraged to wear period costumes.
Our enthusiastic teacher conducts the class using turn of the century texts and curriculum. The students will use quill pens to practice their penmanship and participate in spelling bees. At recess they will play games such as Jack Straws, Rolling the Hoop, Sack Races, Marbles, Ducks Fly and the Game of Graces. Opening exercises include “God Save the Queen” and “Rule Britannia,”. The participants practise arithmetic, recite poetry and study period stories. Students will also have the opportunity to complete crafts appropriate to the period such as corn husk dolls, floor cloths or felting.
